Miyoshi Umeki, born in Otaru Japan in 1929, (and passed away at the age of 78), was the first Asian to win an Academy Award (1978).
Asians and Asian Americans seem to have a difficult time becoming popular in the United States.
Her television appearance (linked above) interests me because nowadays I can't recall having seen any Asian females featured on talk shows.
As an aside, Miyoshi Umeki's Academy Award was for the film Sayonara, in which she played a Japanese woman who has fallen in love with an U.S. military man.
