Let's face it, Wentz Eiji (family name: WENTZ) is a half-American who speaks no English, and that's part of why he's popular in Japan!
Nationality: Japanese
Ethnicity & Heritage: Half- German-American, Half-Japanese.
Language: Japanese
Identifies himself: As Japanese. He is a Japanese-speaking Japanese person
His father is “German-American”, his mother Japanese. He speaks no English. He has siblings, who apparently speak English. Currently he lives by himself in an apartment in Japan.
He debuted as child model, and then later a musician, and was on a TV show. As a high school student he joined Teppei Koike (KOIKE Teppei) and formed the duo WaT (Wentz and Teppei). Now he does a lot of work as a タレント (TV talent) and also has a solo music career, as well as a few acting roles in movies.
Well, Wentz identifies himself as Japanese and claims to speak no English. (I say “claim” because in Japan you have to take English classes at some point.. so I’d think he knows a little English). So, I guess he’s not really a Cosmopolitan or anything like that, huh.
I guess what interests me about Wentz is his visibility as a foreign-looking half-Japanese who speaks only one language. (I would say “He’s a foreign-looking Japanese who was born and raised in Japan”… but there must be dozens of Chinese and Korean people born and raised in Japan who fight with identity issues.)
Wentz once said in an interview that he doesn’t like his foreign appearance—which is ironic, since it’s part of his appeal. So, I bet at some point he's hated looking foreign but feeling 100% Japanese.
Some unanswered Wentz Eiji questions:
1) What nationality is he? (Was he born an American citizen because of his father, and had dual citizenship because of his mother's Japanese blood? Or was he only given on nationality?)
2) What are his kids going to be like, assuming he marries a Japanese woman? Will they wonder, Hey, why is my dad white-looking?Ah well. これからも頑張ってくださいね、ウエンツ瑛士(さん)!
